i like your introduction of Bentham here. if we take that analogy, i'd see the panopticon as technocapitalism which, in the view of this essay, is our ruling, omniscient, omnipresent power online atm. i actually think it's fitting that attaining the cringe sublime and its accompanying virality (pleasing the algorithm gods), involves some sort of baseness of humanity (embarrassment, cringe) and that in order to feel like we have some kind of agency, we perform or amplify cringe, fail in even more fantastic ways, in order to simultaneously reject prevailing 'perfect life' algorithm trends, but also 'succeed' within it when our failure becomes viral. 1 reply
