yummy read & first thoughts... kant is a funny one. the whole terror & god & sublime thing. the smallness one feels is in the face of the sublime & nature. (kant's aesthetics gives us beauty on a human scale as its opposite). soooo if you can have sublime (god) cringe (human-ness) its because of some sort of all seeing eye of non-existing bentham-esque prison proportions (social media). i think the kant line is fuzzy b/c there's a bit further to go... & i kept going to sublimation & freud & psychoanalysis. sublimate to forget but it always pops up b/c viral. constant moving targets of angst & fear & etc & b/c all those spots are hot there is something political about cringe & queerness & gen z-ish & their supposed conservative base trend & fear of being seen as 'outside or other' via algorithmic convergence & so a need to believe you are so seen as to be unseen (90s, pre-sm or art ) b/c it is a choice, not chosen for you. a wish. ps. this pre-podcast exists https://www.thisamericanlife.org/182/cringe

ok first of all, THANK YOU for reading the text, thinking about it and writing back such a thought out comment!! you are just the best. i like your introduction of Bentham here. if we take that analogy, i'd see the panopticon as technocapitalism which, in the view of this essay, is our ruling, omniscient, omnipresent power online atm. i actually think it's fitting that attaining the cringe sublime and its accompanying virality (pleasing the algorithm gods), involves some sort of baseness of humanity (embarrassment, cringe) and that in order to feel like we have some kind of agency, we perform or amplify cringe, fail in even more fantastic ways, in order to simultaneously reject prevailing 'perfect life' algorithm trends, but also 'succeed' within it when our failure becomes viral.

πŸ˜πŸ’– final lil thought. clouds in kant as sublime (think stormy ones) & now ofc our clouds of data storage & information... clouds are ominous in technocapital & kantian (aesthetic) landscape.
