Founders

Last night, a long-time personal friend (currently a founder) called me. 

Over the years we've shared the highs and the lows of life; what he told me last night crushed my soul.

….a partner at the consulting firm we had hired to help us through the mess started drawing circles and a stick person on a flip chart and yelled: “don’t you get it..this is the farmer if he doesn’t have any potatoes he’s done.” 

We eventually pulled through. I'd still like to punch him.

Back in the day I was working at, and later running, our family company. Due to dumb investments and stupid timing, we almost went under. 

I remember as if it was yesterday: we were weeks, maybe days away from having to hand over the keys...

He's been grinding towards his dream for years. Yesterday, a MP at a firm you'd know spoke to him like a silly child playing with a toy. It made me sick. 

I know founders have thick skin, and this is par for the course, but no one deserves to be treated this way. 

It infuriates me.

Investors have 0 excuse for contributing to it any more than a simple “no” does already

He left a job paying close to half a mill to chase his dream…mad respect

Makes me think of the post how people with cushy jobs and golden handcuffs talk about starting a company but are unlikely to actually give that up and start living on ramen

Happens. When you dream big, you have to expect that some will not net it - and it can be as simple as they are just stressed and in a 30 mins call they don’t have the brain energy to really dig into it. That’s why warm intros are so important - if a trusted person says that’s a good founder, you want to listen
