Two identical metal parts, when pressed against each other in the vacuum of space, will stick together and become a single whole. This process is called 'cold welding'. On Earth, this doesn't happen because the parts are covered with a layer of oxidized film and air that act as a buffer. On the International Space Station, astronauts must be very careful not to let clean metal parts touch.
