HOT TAKE: Design - if done for a client, with a brief and made for a purpose to sell something - is not art. 

Design can only be art if it's done for the sole purpose of it being art.

And as for the term ART i have a very simple philosophy. 

ANYTHING that is created with the intention of creating art is art. 

Same with music - ANY SOUND that is created with intention of doing music is music.

I just hear designers (usually young) calling themselves artists and talking about doing art, while in reality it's a poster for a gig with a bands picture on it :) 

We are all artists, but design 99% of the time is not art.
