Fred Smith passed away at the age of 80, but I bet you didn’t know the incredible story of how he saved FedEx.
In 1973, FedEx was hanging by a thread. The company had just $5,000 left in its bank account, barely enough to cover fuel for another week. Most founders would’ve called it quits at this point but not Fred.
Instead of giving up, he took a gamble, literally. Fred flew to Las Vegas, walked into a casino, and put the company’s last $5,000 on the line in a game of blackjack. Against all odds, he walked away with $27,000.
That win bought FedEx one more week of operations. And that one week was all Fred needed to rally new investors, secure funding, and restructure the company. From that moment on, FedEx survived and continued to soar.
Fred Smith passed away today, but his legend lives on as the founder who bet it all at the blackjack table and saved an empire.
Incredible lesson here for founders, the game only ends when you stop swinging! 0 reply
