Diolkos – Periander’s Ancient Road At the end of the 7th century BC, the Corinthian dictator Periander decided to build a great road paved with huge limestone blocks between the two seas. The road was about 7 km long and had two parallel tracks, where the wheels of sturdy carts ran to carry small ships and goods. In other words, these were ancient rails, lubricated with grease, used to pull merchant ships and goods from one bay to the other. According to calculations by physics professor Andrew Tolley, a team of more than 100 people and animals could transport a three-story warship in just 3 hours. This great road, called the “Diolkos”, continued to be used for nearly 1500 years and its remains can still be admired today.
