I’m currently waiting on various approvals from the city. With the long weekend, I’m not sure they will happen any time soon. But I’ll remain hopeful for good news next week.
I found this description from the town’s first bookstore trying to open in June 1966, coincidentally right next to where my space will be:
“The Chamber of Commerce was almost unanimous in their approval of this new bookstore, save for one member, who thought that the store might become a ‘hippy hangout’ and didn't think that the Chamber should approve it. Mike Haggarty pointed out that: ‘If hippies are interested in buying or looking at books, posters, art, etc., they're welcome here.’”
The Checkered Frog bookstore no longer exists unfortunately, but is still fondly remembered.
From one nostalgic local: “The Checkered Frog was a very avant garde bookstore/headshop… the fountainhead of counterculture that we knew we were a part of, just not sure what it was.” 5 replies
