What is Farcaster? Farcaster is a decentralized social media protocol. It runs on Ethereum (specifically Optimism Layer-2). Similar to Twitter/X, user data, profiles, and introductions are entirely yours – they don't disappear even if the platform deletes them. Its most popular output is Warpcast (mobile application), which can be opened with an account for an annual fee of ~$5. Its main features include: Frames (embedding mini-apps into posts), mini-apps, and on-chain interactions. It's very active in Web3 archival (especially crypto/DeFi/NFT), offering uncensored and portable identities. What is the Base App? The Base App is Coinbase's non-custodial wallet + "everything app" (an improved version of the former Coinbase Wallet). It runs on the base chain (Coinbase's Ethereum L2). It's available for trading, earnings, mini-apps, chat, etc. The Connection (and Separation) Between Them The current Base App had integrated Farcaster: It included a Farcaster-powered "Talk" feed (with social sharing). It rewarded Farcaster users with programs like Creator Rewards. Frameworks and mini-apps were being moved to the base chain and embedded in Warpcast/Base App → the goal was a social + finance integration on the chain. But the biggest pivot happened in February 2026: Base App completely removed the Farcaster social feed (Talk feed). The Creator Rewards program was completed (a total of ~$450K had been distributed). The reason: They said, "Let's focus the app on trading/on-chain activity, and leave the social part to Farcaster's own app." Jesse Pollak (Base creator) explained, "Base App wasn't a good Farcaster product anyway, users are returning to Warpcast." Now: Farcaster → The social side lives on Warpcast (that's the main location). Base App → More wallet/trading focused: token swap, on-chain activity, mini-applications (still hosts Farcaster/Zora/XMTP protocols but no social feed). Mini-Apps are still common: On the base chain, mini-apps can be embedded in Farcaster/Warpcast (and vice versa). In short: They used to be a "social + wallet" hybrid, now Farcaster is the social network and Base App is the on-chain finance/wallet. But the ecosystem is currently integrated – Base Chain is one of Farcaster's most active L2s.
