Willkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome! Saw “Cabaret” at the Guthrie last night. Phenomenal performances in an adaptation that chillingly echoed our currently uncertain times. A final reveal via the set design and lighting was a surprise gut punch. It stunned the entire audience into silence. This was not the nutty Cabaret my wife and I saw 20 years ago as a touring company revival of the original Tony winning Broadway musical. This was funny and bawdy and filled with innuendo and suggestive dance numbers. It was also tense and subtle in the first act. Then it was bold and matter of fact in the second. “Wake up!” It screamed. “Ignore the changing reality around you at your peril.”

Never have I ever been to the “new” Guthrie, used to go get student rush tickets there back in high school Imagine the “new” space is quite nice.

Wow, sounds like a truly powerful production. I love when theatre dares to hold up a mirror to society like that not just entertain, but unsettle, provoke, and awaken. It's incredible how a reinterpretation of a classic like Cabaret can feel more relevant than ever. That final reveal sounds haunting… I can only imagine the silence in the room.
