Imagine the entire universe as a 3D lattice, like a Minecraft world,  where each block is a point the size of one Planck length (1.6 x 10^-35 meters). Each point follows a few simple, local rules and can only interact with its immediate neighbors. 1/

That, in essence, is Nobel Laureate Gerard ‘t Hooft's Cellular Automaton Interpretation (CAT) of quantum mechanics. The name comes Conway's game of life, and describes how each point of the universal lattice obeys simple rules based on the state of its immediate neighbors. 4/

We misinterpret this seemingly indeterministic emergent behavior as the quantum wavefunction, which we mistakenly take as real when it's just a statistical tool that reflects our ignorance about the substrate. In other words, quantum mechanics are wrong. 3/

It’s funny because Sabine has this other video where she’s super critical of Wolfram, but when it’s coming from T’hooft, the idea is much more respectable 😂

I read Wolfram’s NKS a long time ago and could never quite figure out if Wolfram is a misunderstood genius or a misguided crank. It’s nice that CAT lends at least some credibility to his theories.

I’m reminded of this Freeman Dyson quote (as hominem and appeal to authority aside): “There's a tradition of scientists approaching senility to come up with grand, improbable theories, Wolfram is unusual in that he's doing this in his 40s” 🫠

In this strictly deterministic arrangement, the state of the universe at time T+1 is entirely determined by its state at time T. But because we cannot access the full underlying information about the lattice, all our predictions at observable scales become probabilistic. 2/

Personally I highly agree, I think it'll be correct to compare it with a video /convay game of life. 

Everything exists at the same time past and future. 

We percept ourselfs in a moment - present.

We can't predict some events based on past but still as in game/video it's all already happened :D
