I envy your ability to balance those things out. Whenever I have a $project on the way, I struggle to stop thinking about what needs to be done, and to check out even for a few hours of enjoyable side quests such as reading. My PhD was most terrible for that — I’d feel guilty whenever I was doing anything other than progressing my research, to the point that entertainment (reading, watching a movie, etc) became not worth it. Not a healthy mental spiral. Yet you find the resolve to tell the bugs to wait while you go touch proverbial grass (which I assume makes you more efficient at fixing them later)

1/ I was getting bored at my job and wanted to refresh my mental models, while getting a differentiating credential in my field 2/ Singapore always appealed to me as a combination of first-world and quality of life (clean, green, safe, great food, etc) while being at the barycenter of growth (Asia)

Appreciate it. Super valid reasons. Currently in Germany and rounding up my Masters EOM. Recently I have been contemplating doing my PHD for similar reasons and have started paying attention for funded programs. Singapore is the top location on my list for the same points you mentioned but not sure I will find a program that fits the line of my work.
