Watch a first large-scale lethal wet bulb temperature exceedance happen at some point in the next ten years

Heat truly is the silent killer. While I fully expect one large and very public event of wet-bulb temperature exceedance leading to mass casualties within this decade, lethal levels of heat quietly collect bodies in the meantime.

300 Muslim pilgrims just died in 49C/120F temperatures doing their lifetime pilgrimage to Mecca (the Hajj) which this year coincides with the hottest season. If this is happening to humans, despite their superior ability (in principle) to predict and shelter from the heat, imagine the silent consequences to the fauna and flora that can't escape.

Welp, looks like an airport in Iran just recorded a heat index (i.e., perceived temperature) of 180°F / 82.2°C, which is well into the “red zone” of the chart below.

The air temperature of 102°F / 38.9°C combined with a humidity of 85% led to that record-breaking heat index.

This is the first time I see a wet-bulb temperature excursion into lethal territory. Wait until this happens in a place like Delhi.

The heat index (temperature and humidity combined) reached 48°C (118°F) in parts of the Philippines this past week. Thankfully, April and May are relatively dry months.

I do expect that we’ll collectively get much more acquainted with the concept of unsafe wet bulb temperatures over the next few years
