In fairness to this initiative, if China, India, and other rising, largely producing countries don’t sign on to climate accords are they even worth the paper they’re written on?

Global co2 emissions hit an all time high last year and with the exception of Covid shutting the world down have been up only since the Paris accord. That doesn’t strike me as a very effective agreement

I’m all for increasing renewable energy and decreasing emissions (who isn’t). To enforce such on a global scale you need an agreement with teeth to it (ie huge fines, etc). Without that it’s just a big circle jerk for everyone to act like they’re doing something

This is a different point than what I responded to — that they “don’t sign on to climate accords”. They do.

To your new point, Xi’s comment was specifically in reaction to the US administration’s 2023 consideration of tying import tariffs to Chinese emissions, which is outside of the Paris Agreement provisions. Signing into the Paris accord was voluntary. Getting imposed trade sanctions isn’t. Those things aren’t the same.

Do you have evidence that China is backing out of the Paris Agreement and their own self-determined NDCs? Their BTR1 as published is consistent with the ETF, and the latest trend points to 25% non-fossil energy production by 2025. AFAIK, their goal to peak CO2 before 2030 and net-zero by 2060 hasn’t been disavowed.

That China (and India etc.) plays an oversized role in determining which SSP we land on, I agree with; that’s pretty obvious given the scale of their demography, industry, and economy. But I don’t see evidence for them abandoning their Paris commitments.
