Constantinople really fell to the Ottomans. I still think of the Romans from 21 July 753 BC -> 29 May 1453. From Monarchy to Republic to Empire to Byzantine Republic. No heterogenous group of people have had a stronger collective identity than the Romans. Res Publicae meant something man.
