has anyone ever felt so overwhelmed by your own capabilities? i am a material scientist, a badminton freak, a rapper, a poet, a writer and some other interesting things (like being gandhi) i never imagined to be any of those except for a badminton player which was my vision for myself growing up but life had other plans along the way and shaped my skillset as it is today my hip-hop is old school, my writing is enticing, my poems are archaic, my badminton game is solid as fuck but my presence as a scientist is not satisfying, i keep pushing myself to yield better results and burn out myself i want to leave the lab, run away and do something that will take my mind off of this particular material if i start something i won't stop until i finish it, even though it's a hobby, i completely indulge myself in what i'm doing and cannot stop (until i burn out myself again) how do i stop it? how do i establish balance? i need some quality advice (nothing philosophical) because i see this as a serious problem

I would love to chat material science sometime. I'm a ceramics nerd. As for your question, I suggest looking at some of the advice from Joshua Waitzkin. He talks about how much time to focus in balance with rest or meditation to yield the best results. I'll see if I can find the video I'm talking about.

i'll watch the video thank you man, i love allocating endless time when it comes to talking material science and ceramics is a beautiful subsect, maybe i can share some insights of my ceramics research from college (i tried to develop a ceramic component that could withstand and possibly deflect a 7.62 - sniper bullet)

Interesting. My ceramics instructor worked for some big arms companies doing ballistics grade ceramics. I'm well aware of how integral they are to many fields. My interest was focalized in pottery and housing. We were prototyping large scale modular firing systems for houses.

The project got iced unfortunately. The lead architect / financier turned ill and passed on. We used mostly simple materials because we wanted to be able to replicate the process in third world countries. The most advanced materials used were kao wool and nichrome. Other than that low fire clay bodies and glazes.

i get the idea, you said you're into pottery and housing, do you operate your own kiln?

I have for several years in the past. There was a point where I was managing several firings simultaneously. I worked as a lab technician in a college ceramics department. Also at the architectural school. Lately I've not been in access to any equipment or time to use it really.
