Though flatbreads have been eaten in many cultures, modern pizza as we know it originated in Naples, Italy in the 18th or 19th century. The classic Margherita pizza, topped with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, was created in 1889 to honor Queen Margherita of Savoy, representing the colors of the Italian flag.
