a lot of writing is just patiently waiting and observing for an idea or story to synthesize 

this is hard to do with a grind set mindset. It’s more like bird watching and no one looks to the best bird watchers for productivity advice

This is exactly why writing is slow. If you only measure time spent hammering out words, you’re missing most of it.

Somewhere on the Mary Oliver/Neil Young continuum. Write everyday vs if you can't write a song in 5 minutes walk away. Patience for inspiration, but be there when it happens. Just my thoughts, and this is across mediums. I think about this a LOT! Love hearing other artists talk about this.

For writing specifically, I think reading everyday is critical, especially challenging works. This is how one learns what’s worth writing in the first place. Its also humbling to know that some works took over a decade to fully plan, write, digest, revise etc

I think, depending on proclivity, this could be said of any medium. It may take a month or a year to make an oil painting for example, but it takes a lifetime to paint that way or see the world that way. Art I feel is simply the expansion of human experience, hard for me to differentiate in terms of humility or respect

Absolute masterpieces can capture the entire world and range of human experience in them that you can read them forever and not feel like you’re missing much from not reading anything else. Imagine how much effort it takes to create something like that… humbling and inspiring

Totally! Input of some sort for every medium, and I get that for writing. There was a time in my life where I read War and Peace in two translations. And now, I have kids. Some songwriters even take years to write songs. I think maybe Leonard Cohen. Don't quote me. Cheers, mad respect
