I try to always be optimistic. I even mostly succeed. But to name one concrete example of when it helped me: when I met the woman who is now my wife, it was love at first sight for me. However, I was not in the best place of my life. Just came out of that one relationship you always regret, and I was on a trip with my very IT-macho colleagues. On top, I really thought she was out of my league, but that is a different challenge. Long story short, this was 21 years ago this May. We are now married and have two amazing kids. I did not think I stood a chance, but still went for it.
