Kawah Ijen Kawah Ijen is a volcanic crater located in East Java, Indonesia, known for its stunning natural phenomena and unique features. It is part of the Ijen volcano complex and is famous for: 1. Blue Flames: At night, sulfuric gases ignite upon contact with oxygen, creating mesmerizing electric-blue flames visible in the crater. This rare phenomenon is caused by the combustion of sulfur compounds. 2. Acidic Crater Lake: Kawah Ijen hosts one of the world’s most acidic lakes, with a pH of less than 0.5. The turquoise-colored lake is filled with sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, making it both beautiful and hazardous. 3. Sulfur Mining: Local miners extract sulfur from the crater, carrying heavy loads (up to 100 kg) in baskets up and down the steep crater walls. 4. Hiking and Tourism: The crater is a popular trekking destination. The hike to the crater rim takes about 1.5–2 hours, offering breathtaking views, especially at sunrise.
