This afternoon, while walking around my city with my three kids, I unexpectedly crossed paths with a former patient from the psychiatric emergency unit where I work nights, a unit caring for patients in acute and particularly challenging situations. I already knew him from a previous admission. He had been hospitalized again after aggressive behavior towards caregivers . Nights can be difficult, but they also give us time to talk, listen, smoke a cigarette together, help with small things I even spent quite some time helping him recover his PUK code and welcome family members coming to visit. Today, he quietly said hello with a smile. He looked well,he was out there, living his life, independently. After everything we had worked through together, seeing him like that was incredibly rewarding. Sometimes, in psychiatry, the greatest victories are the ones you don’t get to see. Until you randomly meet someone in the street and realize they’re doing just fine. ❤️
