Went to Funhouse in Little Tokyo yesterday - it’s a punk-themed Izakaya by Tsubasa Muratani (LA punk legend turned chef).
Felt like an actual izakaya (albeit westernized), as in: a small space and no fancy dining. You either grab a beer and a quick bite at the bar or get a table with your group and stay longer.
The chef (pictured) is cutting the fish behind the bar. The staff will kanpai and shoot a shot of sake with you. The menu is apparently rotating - they do have some staples but the some “courses of the day” will be changing. All the fish is sushi-grade and fresh, and they don’t use shellfish in anything at all. Lots of vegan/vegetarian options, too.
I had the negi toro and the white-fish ceviche (both come in martini glasses with nori chips) and a tomato-mushroom curry. My fave was probably the toro since it had fruit, and I’m a sucker for the sweet-savory combo. Everything else was great, too, but be warned: the curry is a tad spicy and salty (if you’re not much into Japanese-style sauces and broths - just skip it and stick with the fish).
If you’ve read up to this point, I’m considering going on a side quest in the upcoming year to try different izakayas in LA county. If you know of any must-ones outside of these part - please share your recs - happy to go on a day trip for these kinds of experiences
