The President of El Salvador is Nayib Bukele. In 2021, he proposed a law that gave the bitcoin cryptocurrency the status of legal tender in El Salvador. The law was passed by the Legislative Assembly on June 9, 2021 by a majority of 62 out of 84 votes. Bitcoin became legal tender on September 7, 2021. El Salvador became the first country to use bitcoin as a legal tender.
