White cats with blue eyes are more likely to be deaf—especially if they have two blue eyes. This is due to a genetic link between the gene responsible for white fur and blue eyes (the W gene) and the development of the inner ear. Around 60-80% of white cats with two blue eyes are born deaf, while white cats with one blue eye may be deaf only on the side with the blue eye. Bonus fact: Not all white cats carry this gene—some are albino, which is a different genetic condition and doesn’t always cause deafness! 🐱👂
