Blockchain technology was invented when bitcoin was invented. Bitcoin emerged from the counterculture, not the mainstream. Countercultures who want to “change the world”  I would argue that Silicon Valley itself is largely a product of this process: countercultures exploiting technology for entirely different purposes than the original, usually “to change the world.” The result is always a peak of creativity/innovation and in many cases does change the world (though not often in the way it was intended).  P2P networking, the extropian movement, and the cyberpunk movement.
