how do y’all deal with IRL crypto sceptics? today at a pre wedding dinner i ended up having a crypto convo 🫣 (which is just as bad as talking about religion or politics) it’s cos i mentioned im going to cannes so it was kinda unavoidable i was put under the spotlight to answer these questions - what’s a usecase for the blockchain apart from those “ape NFTs” - facebook invested billions in the metaverse and that was a fail so why do people still bother? - what’s the point of crypto when it’s so volatile? - who’s using it every day? - why is it better than normal banking? - whats the point of a “crypto social media” if tiktok pays creators already? - you can’t pay for this dinner using crypto if you offered the waiter stablecoin it would be impossible bro worked in finance aswell so it was like an exam phew im pretty sure i passed the exam but was quite eye opening to see a different perspective everyone ive ever spoken to irl (usually my age) have been super interested so it was first time having an experience like this

- blockchain use case: sending money cross borders to your family cheaply (and permissionlessly) - Metaverse what’s the point: internet has enabled us to connect with people in-line with our interests over our geography. Metaverse is just extrapolating that past text chatrooms - volatile for you, not volatile for someone in Venezuela - banking is nice and works for you here. Not in many African countries and even in rural parts of America - why crypto social? Building toward a social graph that cant truly be taken away from you - stablecoin? You mean usdc? You mean virtual dollars? Have you never used Venmo?

Sounds like you held your ground well. It's wild how crypto convos still feel like defending a thesis. How did you answer the one about blockchain use cases?

You’re lucky you know how to calm pressure and let people understand what they don’t. I can’t even face a crowd in my case

I usually try to avoid disclosing to strangers that I work there. I also agree with these skeptic takes so I usually end up agreeing. I anyways try to correct them on blatant falsehoods but don‘t insist bc I feel self confident about my knowledge. Anyways for me avoidance is it

I kind of understand skeptics. Majority of individuals in the blockchain community are in it for money and the builders feel the need to appeal to that to generate traction for their apps. Kudos to the people building things that solve actual problem and push for a decentralized internet.

it’s ego defense, crypto makes a lot of finance obsolete so they have try to invalidate it like a horse carriage driver questioning the safety of cars in 1908

I generally say. All the negative things you think are mostly true. And yet I still think the blockchain is inevitable. It will be the one of the few ways to prove REAL in the AI future. I also mention X deplatforming. How you can move funds seamlessly carry without having to actually carry. (Ie if you HAD to leave n area. No cash. No jewelry. No gold bars. Just your seed phrase ) The problem is crypto gives skeptics so much ammo. I was one of them.

Why crypto? Because it’s a step better than trusting the banks to run a fair and open system.

I'm the opposite, I don't think we should answer anything. "Do your own research," would be the only answer I would give, unless the person is paying me consulting fees. If you win the race, you don't need to verify your gold medal to every random stranger. You can just say "check the record books".
