Can’t be evil vs. won’t be evil:
As an early Farcaster user who came for the decentralization and who has been around long enough to see a lot of Merkle’s iterations in search of growth, I always come back to the definition of sufficiently decentralized that Varun wrote:
“A social network achieves sufficient decentralization if two users can find each other and communicate, even if the rest of the network wants to prevent it.”
That’s the promise. Thats all I personally signed up for. That’s the thin line between can’t be evil and won’t be evil.
I don’t like the memecoin trader meta at all, but I cant or won’t ever get upset at Dan or Varun for any action in search of growth.
I can get upset if this promise of “2 users communicating even if the rest of the network doesn’t want them to” ever gets broken.
The vision for Farcaster being better than web2 platforms and less extractive can only come true if it reaches scale.
Thx @nickysap for raising good discussion !
