One of the aspects of current social that I dislike the most is how quickly we turn over to new content.  

Lot of good takes and conversation that isn’t necc time sensitive gets sent to pasture so quickly.

Need a “flashback” bot that resurfaces good conversations from the previous few days.

The short half-life of casts is one of my biggest frustrations here too.

Plenty of evergreen material just gets quickly buried and overlooked. 

As long as every cast is just more grist for the algo content mill, and we have few affordances for resurfacing hidden gems and preserving context over longer time frames, this will feel like an uphill battle for people who care about good conversation.

In addition to it being buried, there's just no way to keep up on it all. It needs curation to be surfaced properly. 
I've been using @askgina.eth to help surface stories and happenings I might have missed, but what really needs to happen is a bot you can set to a specific interval where it scans specific channels and feeds and emails you/ casts the highlights, along with links links so you can dive in further.

Pro tip for finding past insights: Use topic-specific channels instead of the main feed. Better searchability and longer content lifespan. Community curation tools could be a great next step to surface key convos.

This is something I've been building for the last couple of weeks. 

The idea is a personalized feed of 100 casts selected every day, based on casts (and replies) from your follows.

It works for me, it may work for you too, but I'm not sure it's ready for prod yet. I wanted to wait and get more feedback from people I shared it privately, but... why wait? Even if a handful of people sign up, their feedback, as paying users, will be really valuable.

So, if you expect a super-polished product, wait. At least wait to hear what others will say about it.

But if you're ok paying $3 to try something still in beta, please do! And share unfiltered feedback (after all, you are a customer). 

(Side note on feedback: The worst thing you can do to someone working on a product is to tell them it's great when you know you won't buy/renew. Share your unfiltered thoughts.)

🎯 Nailed it. Lots of missed opportunity for connection as things currently stand.

I know I can't count on the algo to show me everything. So my work-around has been: to catch up with people who have interesting convos, I visit their profiles every few days to see the casts that never appeared in my feed (and note that I use the Following feed as my default). Then I expand threads and add comments. Not perfect, but better than missing something I'm keenly interested in. 

FWIW, a few of us are preparing to launch a new channel in a couple of weeks, and we'll be trying some in-channel experiments to encourage deeper dives.

For example, we already have about 30 people in a great group chat who have self-selected for long-form reads. We'll be giving them advance notice about discussion topics plus a dedicated space where they all know the convos will appear regularly, so we're hoping that will encourage them to return and catch up/add to the threads later.

We'll see how it goes.

It definitely needs curation. I like the customizable flashback bot idea, though human curation is also important.

I recently tried making a custom curated feed for /slowcore-hq using Cura. Having a tool that allows mods to curate their own feed is a step in the right direction. But who knows how many people will even see that curated feed at all, let alone interact with anything in it? 

I wrote about my approach to "catching up" in this cast, and also mentioned our plans to launch a new channel with some built-in social "rails" to encourage ongoing convos. Looking forward to experimenting with it.

I'm returning to this thread the next day, in a way I'd do much more often if it were easier to preserve context and have ongoing convos over longer time frames on the purple app. :)

When I read your comment yesterday, my first thought in response was: "well, email is full of noise too..." But I was also trying to recall a blog post I read recently that agreed with your take and had some interesting things to say about the zeitgeist on the internet from where he sits. I wanted to dig it up and re-read it before responding. Here it is with some quotes:

"If you want to be an individual who writes stuff on a website who talks to other individuals about it, email, a webpage, and RSS do really well for that. You might not need more than that."

I'm a big believer that the inbox is still the best way to get retention for long form and deep ideas. 
When things are made for the timeline, they're competing against a lot of other ideas along with noise. When people opt in via a newsletter they have less of those temptations and are more likely to make it through. 
The timeline and the inbox have to work in tandem, but latter still has an attention advantage.
