A challenge, absolutely. Impossible!? No. Long standing communities naturally evolve. There are BBS communities I'm in that are still kicking after 20+ years. Sure, there's an ebb and flow to how active they are over that time, but when people make sincere connections and life long memories, they're more willing to stick around. To @dwr.eth's point about how most communities fracture and die, from my experience that's usually due to: a) The community starting pretty much accidentally, but explodes in members even though it was rudderless from the jump b) High ranking mods fracture the community based on internal drama that gets out of control There's no one-size-fits-all approach to solve a lot of these issues, but having people who are in, or have been in long standing online communities are usually able to spot patterns and tackle them to help ensure their longevity.
