Today in the ongoing saga of "why my building sucks and I wish I could move out": I just discovered that the two power outages over the weekend not only cost me some hard-won writing time but also knocked out the cooling function in my mini-split. It was working fine last week. Not the first time this has happened. I also learned that about half of the other units in this building are in the same boat. The management company knows about it but they don't have an ETA on the repairs. So since I don't have any backup option, I now have to decide whether to spend several hundred bucks to buy a new portable A/C unit ASAP, or just try to endure the heat and hope the repairs will happen sooner rather than later. Probably not wise to bet on speedy repairs, so I'll likely get a new portable A/C unit. Otherwise I won't be able to work once the temps hit the 90s. On the plus side: once this multi-year repair saga + lawsuit over the mini-splits installation finally concludes (later this year, I hope), it sounds like my family might actually be able to sell the unit. Fingers crossed. That would mean that after 17 years of living in this seemingly cursed building, I may finally get a chance to look for a new place to live in earnest. Even the *thought* of being able to move within the foreseeable future excites me so much that I hesitate to allow myself to think about it until I have more clarity, because it would be hard to get my hopes up and have them dashed again. Ah, who am I kidding anyway? I'll be doing aspirational Zillow browsing the minute I finish typing this.

Sorry to hear you're going through this. As someone who had to get an AC on short notice, but didn't want to spend a mint on it, Facebook marketplace saved the day. I was able to pick up one for a fraction of the retail price.

Thanks for the sympathies and the suggestion. Hope you're staying cool and comfortable. I talked to the fam and it looks like we're in luck: we may have a similar backchannel solution on the way shortly. Just waiting for updates.
