what is Impact 2.0?
it's one of the building blocks to solve the biggest problem we have with social networks: broken incentives
today all social media is attention-based
if you want to be more successful, you need more people following you, interacting with your content, subscribing to your blog, buying your token (or NFTs, or merch, or whatever), etc
so why is this a broken system?
because it is zero-sum
more attention for you means less for someone else. so you're constantly competing with others, even if you're generally aligned with them otherwise
on top of that, what drives attention to you has little to do with the value you create
because the most effective drivers of attention are drama & conflict (not value creation)
so if you're really good at creating drama & conflict you'll be super successful
if not, you can keep creating value, but it will likely not be rewarded
so everyone has the incentive to compete, and create drama & conflict
is there any wonder then that much of social media looks like a toxic stew of pent up anger?
so how can we fix this?
we need to start by re-aligning the incentives
instead of 'attention = success' we need an algo where 'value creation = success'
this couldn't be done in trad social media, where revenue came from advertising
but it can be done in web3, where tokenized communities and networks can benefit from rewarding those who create value for the network
to do it at scale tho you need a credibly neutral system that determines the value of contributions to the network - this is what we're building with Impact 2.0
unlike attention, value creation isn't zero-sum - it's positive-sum
If you create value for the network it benefits everyone - so everyone on the networks also wants contributors to be rewarded fairly, based on the value they create
in this paradigm you get the most benefit when users pay attention to the things they care about (whether it's your content or that of others)
because that's how you maximize signal on the network
and that's how you get greater prosperity for you and everyone else
instead of drama and conflict, you create alignment and harmony
you build on each other's contributions
