Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Arthur Dent narrowly survives the end of the world, then things get tough. 

If you like sci fi but haven’t read this, you absolutely must. There’s a chance you won’t like it, but it’s more likely that you’ll love it. 

The plot is pretty manic and disjointed, and there’s not a lot of character development in the traditional sense, thought there are a lot of memorable personalities. 

It’s really just a vehicle for a whole bunch of hilarious lines. And it roasts sci-fi with obvious love. 

I laughed out loud when I read it the first time. My 6yo and I laughed out loud on this pass.

Strongly recommended for fans of sci-fi and humor. And for anglophiles, too, now that I think of it.

Wuthering Heights 

Tale of a little love and a lot of weird revenge on the moors of northern England. 

I like a lot of old books. I don’t like this one. It felt intricate without intrigue and dark without thrill. I couldn’t get invested in anyone. 

I’m probably overreaching here, but I’m going to speculate that a big part of why this book didn’t click for me is that it’s an essentially feminine vision of the masculine use of power. There’s no heroic exertion to achieve an outsized result against nature or a true outsider. The use of power in the book is limited to petty flourishes across a vertically compressed, intensely inward facing social scene where hierarchy is considered artificial and trivial.

It felt like a soap opera sponsored by a company that sells sad dirty puddle water.

Not recommended. 

The Kate Bush song is a banger though! 🎼🎵🎶

I avoided it because I felt it would be too heavy in book form, but the mini series with Tom Hardy and his now wife was good. 

And I am also looking forward to the film adaptation with Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi because I’m sure it’s going to be weird. The bones are there, sort of.
