Trump is asserting his power. Since "AI" was coined last century, it has become embedded in research, media, and popular culture. Even those who find it imperfect rarely believe they can change it. Alternatives like synthetic intelligence (also SI), machine intelligence, and computational intelligence exist, but none has AI’s reach. Before Trump, few individuals could turn a personal preference into a nationwide demand to change terminology. I care more about the wording than his motives. “Artificial” evokes human design, supervision, and intervention. If self-supervised learning produces machines that improve themselves without human involvement, the label may feel outdated. Super Intelligence, synthetic intelligence, or machine intelligence all sound more fitting to me. Still, all I can do is agree. Ultimately, renaming is about power. This change suits me. But if I were Mexican or Canadian, suddenly faced with a “Gulf of America” or a “Lake of America,” who would speak up for me?
