Because they are not using beef tallow as the fat for frying them anymore. This changed the taste, they need to emulate it using other stuff.

French fries are from Belgium and cooked in animal oil - perhaps they were trying to do something similar 🤷🏻‍♀️

We dont have it here :(( we do have poutine where we put beef gravy and cheese on top of fries but its different I guess
