For me it depends on how recently floors were cleaned, we don't wear shoes in the house unless we're running in quick but if a guest leaves them on, I won't ask them to take them off unless I just cleaned because, I have to clean again anyway. 
However whoever made this article is setting an ideology I'm against. As much as I'd like guests to have fun and feel comfortable; if you're in my house you're going to respect my belongings and space.
