Burrata at Wild (West Village, NYC): creamy, cloudlike. But, the real surprise was the *gluten free* pizza—charred crust, real chew, bright tomato, fun toppings. (I’m not gf, so that’s saying a lot!) Salad held its own. Service unfussy. Prices fair. You may see Wild use my burrata photo. Ok when they tag me.

RIP to Sweet Corner Bakeshop, Hudson St., NYC. Sea salt chocolate chip cookie. Thick, chewy, molten-center magic. Finished with flakes of salt you could see from across the counter. They also had pão de queijo—because of course they did. 🇧🇷 West Village gem. Gone. 🍪+🧀 = 💥

RIP to my favorite ice cream. Corn ice cream from Cones on Bleecker St., NYC. 🌽 Brazilian-inspired, wildly popular, and honestly… life changing. 🇧🇷 Sweet, creamy, loaded with real corn flavor—and actual corn bits. Finished with a dusting of cinnamon. Still dreaming about it.

Somewhere right off Houston Street in NYC, there was a little spot serving proper schnitzel — crisp, golden, and unapologetically oversized. And with all the right co-stars: cucumber salad, greens, lemon wedge, and a spoonful of tart berry jam. This plate lives rent-free in my memory.

@laursa.eth brings the game here. My favorite ice cream — was the *corn* ice cream from Cones in NYC. 🌽 Apparently popular and inspired by Brasil’s love of that flavor ice cream. 🇧🇷 So f’in good! Sweet, delicious, and with bits of corn. Cinnamon put it over the top. “Was” = recently closed. Damn!

A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry Four strangers—tailors, a widow, a student—collide in 1970s India. What starts as survival becomes kinship, then something even more fragile. You should read it. Mistry, a Booker finalist and Governor General’s Award winner, doesn’t just tell a story—he inhabits it. The prose is restrained, the structure exacting, but it’s the emotional layering that gutted me. I had to set it down for two months after one chapter—too raw, too real. Fiction that close to lived truth feels rare. You don’t just follow the characters. You become them. It’s not a light read. But it may be the one you remember longest.

Which bánh mì do you prefer? With pork floss (NYC, Bánh Mì Zon) or without (NYC, Saigon Deli)? One thing I do know: both of these hole-in-the-wall spots always hit hardest. And they’ve got the real-deal shatter bread—which, let’s be honest, might be the most important part of the bánh naming. 😏
