Social networks need a way to distinguish between positive and negative engagement. I can reply to a post I like with "hey that's really cool", or I can reply to a post I hate with "everything you just said is a lie, and why is your pfp a swastika?", and the algorithm will treat both replies exactly the same by boosting the person I replied to. There are countless major accounts that literally make a living by posting nothing but rage bait. The only way to avoid it is by ignoring content you don't like and possibly reporting the really bad stuff, but that's also counterproductive because it gives extra weight to the voices of the idiots in the replies agreeing with the bad content. I want a way to express my opinions online without having to weigh whether I'm about to reward bad behavior with free engagement. Whoever solves this problem will make the internet a better place.
