There's a saying: some wealth is harvested by draining the merit of past and future lives — or even traded for suffering yet to come. For years, my therapist and I explored the meaning of money. It wasn't until this year that something clicked: Money is the fruit. Merit is the plant that bears it. Don't exhaust the soil. Don't waste the roots. Simply take what ripens, that is enough.

天道運而無所積,故萬物成;帝道運而無所積,故天下歸;聖道運而無所積,故海內服。明於天,通於聖,六通四辟於帝王之德者,其自為也,昧然無不靜者矣。聖人之靜也,非曰靜也善,故靜也,萬物無足以鐃心者,故靜也。水靜則明燭鬚眉,平中準,大匠取法焉。水靜猶明,而況精神!聖人之心靜乎,天地之鑑也,萬物之鏡也。夫虛靜恬淡,寂漠無為者,天地之平而道德之至,故帝王聖人休焉。休則虛,虛則實,實者倫矣。虛則靜,靜則動,動則得矣。靜則無為,無為也,則任事者責矣。無為則俞俞,俞俞者憂患不能處,年壽長矣。夫虛靜恬淡,寂寞無為者,萬物之本也。明此以南鄉,堯之為君也;明此以北面,舜之為臣也。以此處上,帝王天子之德也;以此處下,玄聖素王之道也。以此退居而閒游,江海山林之士服;以此進為而撫世,則功大名顯而天下一也。靜而聖,動而王,無為也而尊,樸素而天下莫能與之爭美。夫明白於天地之德者,此之謂大本大宗,與天和者也;所以均調天下,與人和者也。與人和者,謂之人樂;與天和者,謂之天樂。

日暮途穷,息于老桑。玄牛卧,形如岳,目若渊。余困,枕之而寐。 梦与玄牛论道。 玄牛曰: “子思偏矣,未通道。” 吾曰: “吾心无执,察微达本。” 玄牛问: “世医断命,桎梏大道。因果无定,徒言命耳。” 吾曰: “命若凝,意僵。吾心不绝,死亦争,此道缠绵无尽也。死生之际,内蕴生机,非吾执不得其位。医者,古随物化,今以数断。然道无常,一指岂尽其变?” 玄牛曰: “卜市同理。医多舛。” 吾应: “风水市贾,道何异哉?周而复始,微动生变。药循其势,求巧劲耳。市显卦隐,道之反馈,非俗智可及。利易,观天难。吾或引市,此玄未尽。” 玄牛警曰: “市伤财,卜伤命。无力莫触。拟非真,当求己道。吾疑人身自愈,今术或夺其本能,碍道也。子昔探碎境,巨耗。然皮囊,天地精造,能自化。” 吾再问: “然,市以币,币者符也;卜以命,命者能也。然物、理安在?吾所谓者,物性耳,何居?” 玄牛答: “物理非有。其乃程序之显,若幻境耳。客体空无。物不骤变,身不瞬远。夫符号之界,一念万化。物理,虚象耳。” 吾悟曰: “吾志万物齐一,不滞一线,本符界、疏客体。符、波、息非尽,更有先验之境。” 玄牛倦,曰: “困矣,休。”乃隐。 吾亦惊寤。日暮,桑下空然。清风拂面,若得若失。心有符动,知非凡梦,乃道示也。

四 古之真人,不知說生,不知惡死;其出不訢,其入不距;翛然而往,翛然而來而已矣。不忘其所始,不求其所終;受而喜之,忘而復之。是之謂不以心捐道,不以人助天。是之謂真人。若然者,其心志,其容寂,其顙頯,淒然似秋,煖然似春,喜怒通四時,與物有宜,而莫知其極。故聖人之用兵也,亡國而不失人心;利澤施於萬物,不為愛人。故樂通物,非聖人也;有親,非仁也;天時,非賢也;利害不通,非君子也;行名失己,非士也;亡身不真,非役人也。若狐不偕、務光、伯夷、叔齊、箕子胥餘、紀他、申徒狄,是役人之役,適人之適,而不自適其適者也。
