Started a new round of classes as a swim instructor this week. One advanced class and one absolute beginner class — both adult classes. Off to a great start! A couple of the beginner students who were retaking the level 1 classes told me that swimming improved more in one class with me than all seven classes combined with the previous instructor. Teaching swimming is something I feel like I have the knack for, and it's really nice when the reviews back that up!
I used to mostly teach the kids but now I tend to stick with adults. Love teaching both, but the challenges are completely different. With kids you have to keep them busy. They don't care too much about getting it right, they just want another turn. Adults want to get it right the first time. Their biggest challenge is not learning the strokes, it's facing their fears and overcoming them.
It's been so rewarding to see my students go from fearful of taking their feet off the bottom of the pool to swimming a mile a day in less than a year. I would do this for free.
