The EU AI Act, effective February 2, 2025, introduces a groundbreaking regulatory framework for artificial intelligence in the European Union. It bans AI systems deemed to pose “unacceptable risks,” such as manipulative systems, social scoring, real-time biometric identification in public spaces, and emotion recognition in sensitive contexts like education and workplaces. The Act aims to protect fundamental rights while fostering innovation.
Enforcement includes significant penalties for non-compliance, with fines reaching up to €35 million or 7% of global turnover. National authorities will oversee implementation, supported by the European Artificial Intelligence Board. The Act follows a phased timeline: transparency rules take effect in August 2025, and full provisions are enforced by August 2026.
The primary goals are to ensure trustworthy AI development, enhance transparency and accountability, and position the EU as a leader in ethical AI regulation.
