🏠 Off‑Grid Spotlight 1: Earthship Ironbank (Australia)
0-1Built by Martin Freney near Adelaide Hills, this Earthship is Australia's first council-approved off-grid home. Constructed using recycled tyres, bottles, earth, and cans, it integrates solar power, passive thermal heating via earth tubes, rainwater harvesting (~55,000 L storage), indoor greenhouse, greywater recycling, and natural ventilation. While it can connect to the grid as backup, it operates comfortably off-grid year-round. Interior thermal performance is scientifically monitored to confirm passive climate control works—even in Australia’s bushfire-prone areas.
