the doe invoking the dpa and why this matters:
- the us imports a significant share of enriched uranium from russia, a strategic choke point
- domestic enrichment and fabrication have eroded since the cold war, and private industry can’t carry the costs alone
- invoking the dpa makes nuclear fuel critical infrastructure with guaranteed demand and federal backing to rebuild the industrial base
this is more than energy policy, it’s national security, economic resilience, and a signal that nuclear is central to america’s economic future.
