Back in the day — early 90s — Mecha was the king of otaku meetups. Gundam and Evangelion were on everyone’s lips. Non-stop talk. Then came the dark days. The genre declined, got pushed out, almost forgotten.
Fast forward to 2005 and beyond. Mangakas and directors decided to refine the Mecha formula. They added powers, killed off side characters to build the MC, threw in romance. Suddenly, Mecha was back. Gurren Lagann and Code Geass were everywhere. Then… another decline.
2018 hit, and we got another refine. This time it was machines built for war, raw and grounded. Honestly, the best take on Mecha I’ve seen. 86 dropped and took over — crazy numbers, endless discussion.
Point is: if you don’t refine things, they stagnate. They can’t keep up with changing times, especially now when this generation gets bored in seconds.
