I’ve been taking my mom across Japan and we’ve made some pit stops that aren’t part of our pilgrimage but were close by and worth the detour. Japan has some of the most amazing art I’ve ever seen and much of it is over 1,000 years old and owned by temples. But many of these temples have realized that keeping such delicate pieces inside of temples means they won’t be here for future generations. Many treasure houses have been built or pieces have been sent on loan to museums who can ensure they will get the best preservation work known to us today. Many of them have chosen to preserve the originals and replace them with modern art by current artists and I deeply respect this. One of my favorite artists from Kyoto, Hideki Kimura, has been quietly painting murals and sliding panel doors in temples all over Kyoto and it’s super inspiring to see his beautiful work alongside temples that have stood their ground for centuries. He didn’t start his art career until he was 60 and watching his artwork explode across Japan gives me hope that anyone can change the course of their life and start a new passion at any age. It’s never too late to try something new.

Today was another Snake Day so of course I went to pay my respects to Benzaiten and ask her to bring creativity and wealth to all my Farcaster friends. You may be wondering if I’m going to the same shrine or temple again and again, but in fact, I’ve found over 15 Benzaiten shrines and temples in Kyoto alone! She may not always be the main deity or may share the space, but she’s in many places if you look for her. If you’ve been to Kyoto, you may have walked right past her! Have you been to Ginkaku-ji (The Silver Temple)? She’s there. What about Kiyomizudera? She’s there too! If you see a shrine near water, maybe with a little red bridge leading to it, you may be close! Water and flow are here signatures. Keep your eyes peeled for dragon guardians or snakes if you are lucky!

Every year on Dec 7–8 at Daihōonji Temple they honor the day Shakyamuni Buddha reached enlightenment and boil mountains of daikon with fried tofu in giant pots and offer it to visitors! That daikon radish is is believed to: • Clear bad luck • Protect you from illness and strokes • Keep you healthy through the winter It all started in the Kamakura period, when a monk named Jizen Shōnin wrote Sanskrit for Shaka Nyorai on sliced daikon as a talisman. Those blessed radishes were prayed over, cooked, and eaten for protection. The traditions continues for almost 800 years! And of course I bought the kawaii (cute) daikon radish omamori they only sell on these dates and got a Goshuin (a real life proof of worship NFT!)

Smol world moment. Stepped into a drug store because I needed a vitamin drink and electrolytes and I hear someone call my name. Assume I’m hallucinating. Buy my drink and turn around and standing there is a Farcaster friend I met at FarCon in 2024! What are the odds?? I won’t tag since they are on holiday but my whole day is made. I’m still in shock. And now I’m rehydrated! Kyoto is a magical place.

I now carry incense and a lighter with me because some smaller shrines and temples don’t sell it and I read that it’s a good offering. Today I got to leave some at an unmanned Benzaiten shrine and it made me happy. It smells like cherry blossoms.

It’s SNAKE DAY which means I’m going on an epic adventure to visit as many Benzaiten Shrines and Temples as I can in Kyoto today! Benzaiten is the goddess of all that flows: luck, money, and artist’s inspiration. She’s the only female goddess among the 7 Lucky gods of Japan and has a very close relationship with white snakes, who are her messengers. Any offerings made on snake day are extra good. Need a little something from her? Let me know and I’ll add you to my list to send good vibes! This is my 3rd lucky money bag this trip. It doesn’t seem to be working that well so cheers to 2026 fortune!

Today I saw 6 couples at 4 different temples doing pre wedding photos and I was really proud that I was able to tell they guys they looked cool and the ladies that they looked beautiful. Their parents were normally there too behind the photographers and I told them congratulations and they were all so happy and nice. And then I met a giant white dog who came right up to me at a stoplight and leaned against my legs and the owner was apologizing profusely and I kept saying it was okay and could I pet the dog ;) We ended up chatting for a few minutes and were going to the same temple. The momiji is peak at most places and starting to fall at the high elevations but it’s still beautiful. I’m so thankful I can enjoy this beautiful city.
