Today was another Snake Day so of course I went to pay my respects to Benzaiten and ask her to bring creativity and wealth to all my Farcaster friends. You may be wondering if I’m going to the same shrine or temple again and again, but in fact, I’ve found over 15 Benzaiten shrines and temples in Kyoto alone! She may not always be the main deity or may share the space, but she’s in many places if you look for her. If you’ve been to Kyoto, you may have walked right past her! Have you been to Ginkaku-ji (The Silver Temple)? She’s there. What about Kiyomizudera? She’s there too! If you see a shrine near water, maybe with a little red bridge leading to it, you may be close! Water and flow are here signatures. Keep your eyes peeled for dragon guardians or snakes if you are lucky!

Every year on Dec 7–8 at Daihōonji Temple they honor the day Shakyamuni Buddha reached enlightenment and boil mountains of daikon with fried tofu in giant pots and offer it to visitors! That daikon radish is is believed to: • Clear bad luck • Protect you from illness and strokes • Keep you healthy through the winter It all started in the Kamakura period, when a monk named Jizen Shōnin wrote Sanskrit for Shaka Nyorai on sliced daikon as a talisman. Those blessed radishes were prayed over, cooked, and eaten for protection. The traditions continues for almost 800 years! And of course I bought the kawaii (cute) daikon radish omamori they only sell on these dates and got a Goshuin (a real life proof of worship NFT!)

Smol world moment. Stepped into a drug store because I needed a vitamin drink and electrolytes and I hear someone call my name. Assume I’m hallucinating. Buy my drink and turn around and standing there is a Farcaster friend I met at FarCon in 2024! What are the odds?? I won’t tag since they are on holiday but my whole day is made. I’m still in shock. And now I’m rehydrated! Kyoto is a magical place.

I now carry incense and a lighter with me because some smaller shrines and temples don’t sell it and I read that it’s a good offering. Today I got to leave some at an unmanned Benzaiten shrine and it made me happy. It smells like cherry blossoms.
