A backup battery could’ve helped your home keep the tree lit, space heaters blasting, and snow blower charged & ready to go.

We need to start thinking about the grid more like a blockchain. Each house can be a node, coordinating together to support a greater network. Energy is an asset with value that can be generated and shared. Decentralization only makes networks stronger and more resilient.
