We've seen quite the about face in immigration here the last year and a half of so. This mostly has to do with changes to visas for students and temporary workers.
23% of our population was born outside the country. This is amongst the highest outside the Middle East.
Top countries of origin for foreign born:
India - 10.7%
Philippines - 8.6%
China - 8.6%
Trudeau really cranked immigration numbers after the pandemic, mostly because there was a labor shortage. Net migration was 1.1 million in 2023 alone. That is pretty significant for a country of about 40 million people. 2025 was the first year in Canadian history with negative net migration.
