The funny part about this study is that it makes the massive assumption that Alberta would keep all of it's land and resources
Any realistic negotiations would end up with an "independent" Alberta only being a fraction of it's current size

Chretien, PM during 9/11, with an amazing speech. Gander, Newfoundland, population 10k, took in 6500 people that could not land on 9/11. This was such a significant gesture that the US ambassador, as controversial as he may be this on side of the border, attended this ceremony today. 165 Canadians died in Afghanistan.

While GDP can be misleading and this sort of way to measure things is reliant on a capitalist framework, there really isn't a better way to compare economies, that I have seen. Naturally prosperity, health, happiness, and overall well-being are different things entirely.
Canada has seen up and down GDP numbers lately, but a win is a win I guess?
