Venezuela holds some of the world’s largest proven oil reserves, along with major deposits of natural gas, gold, and other critical minerals, making it one of the most resource rich countries on earth. Its location on the northern coast of South America, with direct access to the Caribbean and major Atlantic shipping routes, places it close to U.S. shores and vital trade lanes, giving it outsized strategic importance. Because of this, Venezuela has long been viewed by the United States as a key country for energy security and regional stability. From a realpolitik perspective, U.S. policymakers often argue that achieving these interests requires a cooperative Venezuelan government, which is why Washington has historically supported efforts to influence or replace leadership it sees as hostile to U.S. economic and strategic goals.
