The dark forbidding area to the left of the bandstand is the source of the waters — a cave so infused with carbon dioxide that to explore it without a tank of compressed air would mean certain death.
People have swum in this water for years, even in the winter since it maintains a constant temperature year round.
If anyone sank it was only because they were really poor swimmers
