What's your small town mystery? This incident dates back to around 2003, when I was serving as Trivandrum Police Commissioner. Trivandrum is a small city, which is home to the Padmanabhaswamy Temple, the family temple of the erstwhile Travancore royal family. The temple has a big idol of Lord Vishnu, the presiding deity, in a room that does not get much light. Over the decades, the idol got totally blackened as soot and oil deposited on it due to the lighting of oil lamps. However, one could see that the arm bracelets and the crown of the idol were gold plated. Nobody thought much about the matter and the story would have ended there.
