The other evening, I was sitting at a café, reading my book, when a young woman came in and sat down next to me. She seemed like she was waiting for someone but was clearly anxious. I overheard her on the phone talking about a big job interview. Without thinking, I smiled and told her, “Good luck with the interview, I’m sure you’ll do great.” She smiled back, and as I left, I noticed she was much more at ease, making me feel like I had shared a little bit of encouragement.
