Last week, I underwent eye corrective surgery, more precisely, PRK. It’s the best investment I’ve made in the past five years. Before the procedure, I filled out a form that asked why I wanted the surgery. I shaded the box that said: “Freedom from eyeglasses.” I’ve been wearing glasses for 20 years. They’ve helped me function, but they’ve also shaped how I live. Glasses weigh a lot (especially with my high prescription). They leave marks on your face. After a long day of wearing them, I experience fatigue in both my nose and my eyes. Glasses fog up, slip down, and in a way, they define your routines. Every morning, the first thing I reached for was my glasses. Even now, when I wipe my face, I instinctively remove glasses that are no longer there. Without my lenses, I couldn’t drive, read, or even recognize who was at the doorway. Only outlines and colors. Now, with clear vision, it feels like a new world has opened up. I can wear shades like Tom Cruise in Top Gun. I can run, play sports, and move freely without sweat trickling down my lenses. And perhaps most exciting of all, I can finally experience emerging tech like VR and AI glasses, the way they’re meant to be experienced. It’s only been a week since the surgery, so I’m not getting that 20/20 vision. But I’m functioning and typing this reflection without glasses, something that would not have been possible before. I’m feeling very positive about the future.
